Xbox NAT Type Checker
Estimate your NAT type before launching your Xbox. Then follow the fixes below if you're seeing Strict or Moderate.
Run NAT type test
Tests against four STUN servers. Takes about 4 seconds.
Xbox NAT types explained
- Open — every Xbox Live feature works. Party chat, matchmaking, hosting.
- Moderate — most things work, but you may be deprioritized in matchmaking.
- Strict — party chat with other Strict players will fail. Lobbies will host you only when an Open player is present.
Fixes that actually work
- Enable UPnP in your router settings. This solves it for most users in one click.
- Forward these UDP ports to your Xbox's local IP: 88, 500, 3074, 3544, 4500. Plus TCP 3074.
- Reserve your Xbox's IP in DHCP so the forwarding rule doesn't break.
- Disable double NAT — if you have an ISP modem + your own router, put the modem in bridge mode.
- Check for CGNAT — if you see a NAT type that won't change no matter what you do, your ISP may be using carrier-grade NAT. Call them and ask for a public IPv4 address.
