NAT Type Checker
Estimate your NAT type using WebRTC + STUN. Diagnose Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, and Discord connectivity issues.
Run NAT type test
Tests against four STUN servers. Takes about 4 seconds.
What is NAT type?
NAT (Network Address Translation) is how your router lets many devices share a single public IP. The way it maps connections affects whether peer-to-peer games and voice chats can connect directly to other players.
- Open (NAT 1) — best. Direct connections work for any peer. Hosting is easy.
- Moderate (NAT 2) — common. Most games work, but party chat and matchmaking with Strict players can fail.
- Strict (NAT 3) — restrictive. You can only connect to Open peers, and hosting is impossible.
How to fix Strict NAT
- Enable UPnP in your router's settings.
- Set up port forwarding for your console or PC's local IP. (See our port forwarding guide.)
- As a last resort, place your device in the DMZ — but only if you understand the security trade-off.
- If you're behind CGNAT (carrier-grade NAT, common with mobile broadband and some fiber ISPs), no amount of port forwarding will help. Contact your ISP to request a public IPv4 address.
