NAT Type Checker

Estimate your NAT type using WebRTC + STUN. Diagnose Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, and Discord connectivity issues.

Run NAT type test

What is NAT type?

NAT (Network Address Translation) is how your router lets many devices share a single public IP. The way it maps connections affects whether peer-to-peer games and voice chats can connect directly to other players.

  • Open (NAT 1) — best. Direct connections work for any peer. Hosting is easy.
  • Moderate (NAT 2) — common. Most games work, but party chat and matchmaking with Strict players can fail.
  • Strict (NAT 3) — restrictive. You can only connect to Open peers, and hosting is impossible.

How to fix Strict NAT

  1. Enable UPnP in your router's settings.
  2. Set up port forwarding for your console or PC's local IP. (See our port forwarding guide.)
  3. As a last resort, place your device in the DMZ — but only if you understand the security trade-off.
  4. If you're behind CGNAT (carrier-grade NAT, common with mobile broadband and some fiber ISPs), no amount of port forwarding will help. Contact your ISP to request a public IPv4 address.
